the birth of time: The universe makes its own time. There is no outside timekeeper. Space and time are part of the universe, not the other way around, thinkers since Augustine have said, and that is one of the central and haunting lessons of Einstein's general theory of relativity. ... this according to a IHT story ... The Scientist reports "The X-ray structure of the last of the major pigment-containing protein complexes involved in photosynthesis has been resolved and provides new insights into this most fundamental of biochemical processes. In the November 27 Nature, David Stroebel and colleagues at the National Center for Scientific Research/Université Paris 7 report the unusual properties of a key protein complex of the photosynthetic electron transfer chain, cytochrome b6f, and describe important features that refine the understanding of the photosynthetic pathway (Nature, 426:413-418, November 27, 2003).
In oxygen-producing photosynthetic organisms, light energy is captured by the reaction centers photosystem II (PSII) and photosystem I (PSI)—both large membrane-embedded protein complexes—and used to extract electrons from water molecules. These electrons then pass through a long chain of redox cofactors until they reach nicotinamide-adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADP), converting it to the reducing agent NADPH, which is needed for the synthesis of sugars. Cytochrome b6f plays a crucial role in this". WOW! Definitely exciting times ...

Initial sequencing and comparative analysis of the mouse genome is this month's Hot Paper in BiologyInitial The paer is authored by R.H. Waterston and 222 others [Mouse Genome Sequencing Consortium], and appeared in Nature, 420(6915): 520-62, 5 December 2002.
" Abstract: "The sequence of the mouse genome is a key informational tool for understanding the contents of the human genome and a key experimental tool for biomedical research. Here, we report the results of an international collaboration to produce a high-quality draft sequence of the mouse genome. We also present an initial comparative analysis of the mouse and human genomes, describing some of the insights that can be gleaned from the two sequences. We discuss topics including the analysis of the evolutionary forces shaping the size, structure and sequence of the genomes; the conservation of large-scale synteny across most of the genomes; the much lower extent of sequence orthology covering less than half of the genomes; the proportions of the genomes under selection; the number of protein-coding genes; the expansion of gene families related to reproduction and immunity; the evolution of proteins; and the identification of intraspecies polymorphism." ... Thank goodness there are a lot of mice to experiment on ... The more you get into this the more fascinating the whole thing is.

According to amazonian lore retracing the dawn of fiestaware: The Homer Laughlin China Company was founded in 1871 when brothers Homer and Shakespeare Laughlin won a $5,000 competition posed by the East Liverpool, Ohio, city council to anyone who would construct a factory that produced whiteware--the trend in ceramics at the time. In developing his ceramics company, owner Homer Laughlin's goal was to produce finely crafted dinnerware that was also affordable enough for every family to enjoy. The company had many major milestones, including becoming the first U.S. ceramic manufacturer to produce American china in the mid-1880s ... The company's greatest achievement, however, is the creation of its popular Fiestaware line in 1935. Many of the early art deco shapes have become highly valuable to both collectors and museums ... "

According to CNN, "A third person died Friday and nearly 500 others who ate at a Chi-Chi's Mexican restaurant have fallen ill in the outbreak that has prompted the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to send assistance. ... Health investigators are focusing on whether contaminated produce -- perhaps scallions -- caused the outbreak at the restaurant in the Beaver Valley Mall, about 25 miles northwest of Pittsburgh. ... Officials at the mall said sales at the food court were off by as much as 40 percent and sales throughout the mall were down up to 25 percent." This is pretty scary stuff ... and bad for Christmas ... I hope they solve this Hepatitis mystery real soon ...

Did you know ..."OMIM, Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man, is a catalogue of the 6000 known human mendelian characters, created by Victor McKusick. It is updated continuously and is accessible at websites listed in Box 1. OMIM is the essential starting point for acquiring information on human mendelian characters, both pathological and non-pathological. Each character is given a 6digit MIM number which is widely used to identify it in genetic literature thus achondroplasia is MIM 100800 and Huntington disease is MIM 143100." (via NLM)

Connecting the Fat Dots I hope some really smart life scientist /molecular biologist / genomicist / proteomicist / or whatever is connecting the "fat dots". Here are some of the clues Obesity and Adipose Tissue and Zn-alpha2 glycoprotein-1 may be a candidate gene for obesity. Let us know how the picture turns out.

Echoes and Precursors in other research centers align with the previous comment .... a recent PUBMED ENTRY: Identification of epistatic interaction involved in obesity using the KK/Ta mouse as a Type 2 diabetes model: is Zn-alpha2 glycoprotein-1 a candidate gene for obesity? Gohda T, Makita Y, Shike T, Tanimoto M, Funabiki K, Horikoshi S, Tomino Y. ... Juntendo University School of Medicine, Tokyo, Japan. ... Recently, we reported the susceptibility loci contributing to type 2 diabetes and related phenotypes in KK/Ta mice. In this study, we focused on expression in the kidneys and liver of KK/Ta and BALB/c mice using differential display (DD) PCR. Zn-alpha(2) glycoprotein-1 (Azgp1) mRNA levels were increased in the kidneys and liver in KK/Ta mice, and sequence analysis revealed a missense mutation. We analyzed the relationship between this polymorphism and various phenotypes in 208 KK/Ta x (BALB/c x KK/Ta) F1 backcross mice. Statistical analysis revealed that Azgp1 and D17Mit218 exhibit a suggestive linkage to body weight (8 weeks) ... Moderate gene-gene interactions were observed at these loci. Adiponectin mRNA levels in 3T3-L1 cells transfected with the expression pcDNA 3.1 vector containing Azgp1 coding sequence of KK/Ta mice were significantly higher than those of BALB/c mice. These results suggest that Azgp1 is a possible candidate gene for regulation of body weight, elucidation of polygenic inheritance, and age-dependent changes in the genetic control of obesity. [more]

There's something in them Almonds ... according to a recent Ananova story The survey of 65 overweight and obese adults - 70% of whom had type 2 diabetes - found that those put on a moderate fat diet containing almonds lost more weight than those on a low-fat diet without almonds. ... another story claims The team at Aston University in Birmingham are looking at the role of a protein, called zinc alpha 2 glycoprotein (ZAG), which appears to promote weight loss without an obese person having to reduce their food intake. ... This happens because the protein targets fat breakdown while not affecting muscle mass.

According to 23 October Ananova 'Humans could live for hundreds of years' "By carefully tweaking genes and hormones, scientists extended the lifespan of the tiny roundworm Caenorhabditis elegans six times. In human terms, the worms stayed healthy and active for 500 years. .... The researchers pointed out that the chief mechanism they tampered with - a signalling pathway involving insulin - was common in many species, including mammals. ... researchers said mutations that inhibit insulin/IGF-1 (insulin-like growth factor) signalling can double the life span of C. elegans." ... Interesting but would you pay the hidden costs?

The Last Ridge : The Epic Story of the U.S. Army's 10th Mountain Division and the Assault onHitler's Europe is getting all the attention now ... its rate of sales increase has been zooming exponentially ... what's the story?
"When World War II broke out in Europe, the American army had no specialized division of mountain soldiers. But in the winter of 1939–40, after a tiny band of Finnish mountain troops brought the invading Soviet army to its knees, an amateur skier named Charles Minot “Minnie” Dole convinced the United States Army to let him recruit an extraordinary assortment of European expatriates, wealthy ski bums, mountaineers, and thrill-seekers and form them into a unique band of Alpine soldiers. These men endured nearly three years of grueling training in the Colorado Rockies and in the process set new standards for both soldiering and mountaineering. The newly forged 10th Mountain Division finally faced combat in the winter of 1945, in Italy’s Apennine Mountains, against the seemingly unbreakable German fortifications north of the Gothic Line. There, they planned and executed what is still regarded as the most daring series of nighttime mountain attacks in U.S. military history, taking Mount Belvedere and the sheer, treacherous face of Riva Ridge to smash the linchpin of the German army’s lines.
Drawing on unique cooperation from veterans of the 10th Mountain Division and a vast archive of unpublished letters and documents, The Last Ridge is written with enormous warmth, energy, and honesty. This is one of the most captivating stories of World War II, a blend of Band of Brothers and Into Thin Air. It is a story of young men asked to do the impossible, and succeeding. "

Its not clear why Designing Dynamic Cross Tab/Pivot Tables with T-SQL Stored Procedures is hot, but it is. The blurb claims One of the most fascinating features in MS-Access is the TRANSFORM statement. This statement can help a user write dynamic cross tab reports and pivot table-based reports. To get similar functionality in SQL Server, we have to jump through hoops or try third-party solutions, which cost a packet. In this article, Ramesh Mani will be looking at a TSQL stored procedure that can generate cross tab/pivot table reports from SQL Server databases. . I am not sure I understand this, but if it works, joy!

On ABC tonight ... "In an hour-long ABCNEWS special, "Jesus, Mary and Da Vinci," Elizabeth Vargas explores these and other controversial theories about the lives of Jesus and Mary Magdalene, who some scholars believe was not a prostitute, as she is often portrayed, but rather Jesus' wife ... One thing several authorities interviewed agree on is that Mary Magdalene's portrayal as a prostitute is attributable to mistaken identity, and her importance may have been grossly understated — or, as some charge, purposely suppressed by the church. "There's no factual basis for that longstanding tradition that Mary Magdalene was a prostitute, a woman of ill repute," says the Rev. Richard McBrien of Notre Dame University. "Mary Magdalene is one of the greatest saints in the history of the church." ... we think the mystery of Mary deserves closer attention.
