Cathedral Of The Black Madonna: The Druids And The Mysteries Of Chartres (another Jean Markale readable ...) buried in the mysteries of time. (...The great cathedral of Chartres is renowned the world over as a masterpiece of High Gothic architecture and for its remarkable stained glass, considered alchemical glass, and its mystical labyrinth. But the sacred foundations of this sanctuary go back to a time long before Christianity when this site was a clearing where druids worshiped a Virgo Paritura: a virgin about to give birth. This ancient meeting place, where all the druids in Gaul gathered once a year, now houses the magnificent Chartres cathedral dedicated both to the Virgin Mary, Mother of God, and to one of the most venerated Black Madonnas in Europe: Our Lady of the Pillar. Coincidence? Hardly, says Jean Markale, whose exhaustive examination of the site traces Chartres' roots back to prehistoric times and the appeal of the Black Madonna back to the ancient widespread worship of Mother Goddesses such as Cybele and Isis.

Markale contends that the mother and child depicted by the Black Madonna are descended from the image worshipped by the druids of the Virgin forever giving birth. This image is not merely a representation of maternal love--albeit of a spiritual nature. It is a theological notion of great refinement: the Virgin gives birth ceaselessly to a world, a God, and a humanity in perpetual becoming ... from the description).

one of the key players in Aging/Calorie Restriction Research is Leonard P. Guarente. According to his page:

"Limiting calories in the diet extends the life span of rodents by an unknown mechanism. We found that calorie restriction (CR) also extended life span of yeast mother cells, by limiting their concentration of glucose. This extension required SIR2 and sufficient levels of NAD; it was prevented by deleting SIR2 or genes involved in NAD synthesis. CR extends life span in yeast because it increases the rate of respiration. Mutations that block respiration prevent the extension and a genetic trick to increase respiration extends life span in high glucose. CR increases the silencing activity of Sir2p, perhaps because NAD levels rise when respiration increases. We are presently developing a method to calorie restrict C. elegans. We will test possible involvement of each C. elegans SIR2 gene in any extension in life span."

interesting ...

He also authored Ageless Quest: One Scientist's Search for Genes That Prolong Youth by Leonard Guarente --- a related interesting title is The Immortal Cell: One Scientist's Quest to Solve the Mystery of Human Aging by Michael D. West

Posted by E Moritz @ 11:12 PM CST [Link] [No Comments]

David Secko reports in The Scientist 'Longevity' gene, diet linked SIRT1 may play role in why calorie restriction leads to longer life in rats. The story "Experiments on yeast, worms, and mammals have all revealed that cutting calories extends lifespan, but how is this occurs is largely unknown. Now, two independent studies, one reported in the June 18 Science, from David Sinclair's laboratory at Harvard Medical School, and the other reported in the June 3 Nature, from Leonard Guarente's laboratory at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, have uncovered molecular mechanisms linking aging, diet, and a gene called SIRT1" ... "SIRT1 was found to repress the fat-regulating protein PPAR-ã and other genes that drive fat storage following calorie restriction"

Casuistry is any attempt to determine the correct response to a moral problem, often a moral dilemma, by drawing conclusions based on parallels with agreed responses to pure cases, also called paradigms. Another common everyday meaning is "complex reasoning to justify moral laxity." Casuistry is a branch of applied ethics. It is the standard form of reasoning applied in common law. Casuistry takes a relentlessly practical approach to morality. Rather than applying theories, it examines cases. By drawing parallels between paradigms, so called "pure cases," and the case at hand, a casuist tries to determine the correct response (not merely an evaluation) to a particular case. The selection of a paradigm case is justified by warrants, and opposed by ??? [forgot the word]. This form of reasoning is the basis of case law in common law. Casuistry is successful because it does not require participants in the evaluation to agree about ethical theories or evaluations before making policy. Instead, they can agree that certain paradigms should be treated in certain ways, and then agree on the similarities, the so-called warrants between a paradigm and the case at hand. Since most people, and most cultures substantially agree about most pure ethical situations, casuistry often creates ethical arguments that can persuade people of different ethnic, religious and philosophical beliefs to treat particular cases in particular ways. For this reason, casuistry is the form of reasoning used in English Law. Casuistry as a method was popular among Catholic thinkers in the early modern period, especially the Jesuits. It however was later attacked (e.g. by Pascal) as the mere use of complex reasoning to justify moral laxity; hence the everyday use of the term to mean complex reasoning to justify moral laxity. Casuists have often been mistrusted as too self-serving, and their reasoning thought too inaccessible. The reasoning is often inaccessible because successful casuistry requires a large amount of knowledge about paradigms, and how parallels can be drawn from those paradigms to real life situations. In modern times, there is a similar tremendous resentment against lawyers and law. In modern times, Casuistry has successfully been applied to Law, bioethics and business ethics, and its reputation is being rehabilitated. A good reference is "The Abuse of Casuistry", by Albert Jonsen and Stephen Toulmin.

So do Stem Cell Issues count in the Casuistry discussion?

Google Logo Mystery is gripping the blogs ... or maybe just a few blogs ... GTEXTS builds on Stuart Buck's post; there's The Unofficial Google Fan Club's post discussing BRYBGR. A thought that occurs is the possibility of Brin using Blue and Red as a pointer to BR-IN. I was going to throw in a reference to Zipf's law and rank ordering ... but didn't get to do that yet. Of course one could attribute some mnemonic attribute such as 'BRing Your Bottle GRandma' - nah, that's a real stretch; but what could BRYBGR stand for? Try blog.outer-court.com's observations. Of course there's fish.cx if you really need more google oriented irreleventia ...

Just for the record, CodeProject identifies Google's font as Catull, and introduces GPaint as a "program to create Google-like logos".

Digital Korea Herald reports that Dennis Hwang (Hwang Jung-moak) is the Korean computer artist (residing in the United States), "who has been drawing the face of Google for almost two years". So Dennis probably's got the best handle ... You might get insight looking at his own words on the googleblog.

Google News Design Critique is a deep design piece ... keep it for later in-depth review.

The BRYBGR Mystery is still open. .... later ... gotta go 'n feed the alligators ....

January 13 search led to Ancient Myths and the New Isis Mystery: Seven Lectures Given in Dornach 4 to 13 January 1918 and a Lecture Given in Dornach 24 December 1920 by Rudolf Steiner (reviewed as "In these lectures, Steiner looks at the Egyptian, Greek, and Hebrew myths and illustrates how the myths expressed the consciousness of the people of that time. He sees in the Osiris-Isis story an expression of the loss of a direct experience of the supersensible world. He shows the connection between this loss and the challenge we face today to bring new life to our abstract ways of knowing. ... Steiner then offers a remarkable story, a new Isis legend. In the Egyptian myth the veiled Isis states, "I am the All, I am the Past, the Present, and the Future; no mortal has yet lifted my veil." In the New Isis legend as told by Rudolf Steiner, the Isis figure states, "I am the Human Being, I am the Past, the Present, and the Future. Every mortal should lift my veil." .... RUDOLF STEINER (1861-1925) became a respected and well-published scientific, literary, and philosophical scholar, particularly known for his work on Goethe's scientific writings. At the beginning of the twentieth century, he began to develop his earlier philosophical principles into an approach to methodical research of psychological and spiritual phenomena. His multifaceted genius has led to innovative and holistic approaches in medicine, philosophy, religion, education (Waldorf schools), special education (the Camphill movement), economics, agriculture (biodynamics), science, architecture, and the arts (drama, speech and eurythmy). In 1924 he founded the General Anthroposophical Society, which has branches throughout the world." ) On the other hand ...
