THE LAW OF TAX-EXEMPT ORGANIZATIONS no doubt applies to you .. they say "US nonprofit boards, officers, senior managers, and funddevelopment professionals have enough to contend with without alsoracing to keep pace with the accelerating changes in the multi-faceted law of tax-exempt organizations. ... As with his prior editions, Hopkins has managed to address, within the covers of a single volume well, actually, he added another book to more fully cover private foundations!
This is definitely a must-have book for anyone working for or with US nonprofit organizations, such as board members, officers, senior staff, fund development staff or fund-raising consultants, grantwriters, attorneys and accountants advising tax-exempt organizations, and anyone else requiring a single-volume treatise covering the law of tax-exempt organizations."

What do you think of when you think of cellular morphology? Do you think of Mini-E1A gene and gene products, or Polynucleotides encoding STE20-related protein kinases and methods of use, Compositions and methods for the treatment of viral disorders, or Reversal of cancer phenotype by inhibiting expression of prostate tumor inducing gene, or Sulfoxide and bis-sulfoxide compounds and compositions for cholesterol management and related uses? You might want to. Or you could be thinking of Neuronal Plasticity ... take your pick. Just to think, I was talkin to B about Neuraonal Plasticity about a week ago, and boom this comes up on MesH. (thinl was the typo).

United States Patent 6,549,915: Storing and recalling information to augment human memories is something to keep track of. Abstract: A system for computer-based storing of information about a current state so that later recall of the information can augment human memories. In particular, when information about a current event of interest is to be stored, a variety of current state information of different types (e.g., video, audio, and textual information) about the environment and about a user can be acquired via sensors and other input devices. The variety of state information can then be associated together as a group and stored for later retrieval. Other information can also be associated with the group, such as one or more recall tags that facilitate later retrieval of the group, or one or more annotations to provide contextual information when the other state information is later retrieved and presented to the user. When information about a past event is to be recalled, one or more identifying recall tags can be received that are used to identify one or more state information groups that match the identifying tags. Some or all of the previously-acquired state information for the identified state information groups can then be presented to the user on appropriate output devices. Other information, such as annotations, can also be presented to the user in order to describe the state information and thus assist the user's recollection of the previous state when the information was stored.

JET 708750B/JWBS-18 18" Woodworking Bandsaw with Bearing Guides Trinen says this of the saw "This 18-inch band saw offers high-quality construction and big resawing capacity to serious woodworkers on a tight tool budget. This saw's most prominent benefit is the one-piece, dual tapered column design, which offers superior rigidity and strength, minimizing vibration and keeping cuts clean, smooth, and accurate. Woodworkers in the know will also appreciate the inclusion of roller bearings on both the upper and lower guides, with dual roller bearings on each side of the blade and a single bearing behind the blade for back support. The system greatly reduces the friction inherent in stationary and European guide systems while providing more support. The saw is powered by a totally enclosed, 1-1/2-horsepower, fan-cooled motor with a blade speed of 3,000 sfpm. There's a large cast-iron worktable (19 by 19 inches) that tilts 45 degrees to the right and 10 degrees to the left. This model also comes with a JET rip fence and a good miter gauge. The saw's maximum cutting height is 10-1/4 inches, and the upper blade guide uses a smooth and precise rack-and-pinion adjustment mechanism. This tool's versatility just keeps on going, accommodating 133-inch blades from 1/8 to 1-1/2 inches wide for equally smooth curve cutting or resawing. JET puts the finishing touches on the saw with two locking cabinet doors and the durable powder-coated finish found on all their shop tools. In all, we think serious woodworkers will really appreciate the high quality JET is able to deliver for such a low cost." -- what do you think?

Movies making the cut ... the 2004 season -- sets and more: Fantasia (60th Anniversary Special Edition) (1940), Finding Nemo, Pirates of the Caribbean - The Curse of the Black Pearl, Seabiscuit (2003), Intolerable Cruelty [Bret Fetzer says of this about IC: A sleek George Clooney and a seductive Catherine Zeta-Jones square off magnificently in the divorce comedy Intolerable Cruelty. The plot is simple: Lawyer supreme Miles Massey (Clooney, Out of Sight, Ocean's Eleven) skillfully outmaneuvers gold-digger Marylin Rexroth (Zeta-Jones, Chicago, Traffic) when she divorces her wealthy husband--and she sets out to get revenge. But this movie comes from the creative minds of the Coen Brothers (Fargo, Raising Arizona, O Brother Where Art Thou?), and so Intolerable Cruelty includes a Scottish wedding chapel in Vegas, an asthmatic hit man, fluffy-dog-stroking European nobility, and a legendarily unbreakable pre-nuptial agreement. ... It's still damn funny, though, with top-notch performances from the leads as well as Geoffrey Rush, Cedric the Entertainer, and Billy Bob Thornton --- worth a look], Lost In Translation ... what do you think?

SPIRULINA AND BEER ... THE SECRET OF IMMORTALITY? ... the claims "... microalgae is 60% all-vegetable protein, rich in beta carotene, iron, vitamin B-12 and the rare essential fatty acid, GLA." ... BIOSPACE SAYS 'German Unveils Anti-Ageing Beer ... It must be every drinker's dream and it has now become a reality, at least if you believe the manufacturer. Keep young and beautiful by drinking beer - that is what Bavarian entrepreneur Helmut Fricher is promising. Anti-ageing beer was presented to the world at a German agricultural fair this week - a drink which the brewer says will bring body and soul into harmony. But the new wonder drink may fall foul of Germany's oldest law, the Beer Purity Regulation. The anti-ageing beer that Mr Fricher presented to the Green Week trade fair in Berlin is supposed to help strengthen the immune system and make you feel good in a way that other beers just do not" ... the claim is mushrooming as a result of Ray Furlong's (BBC correspondent in Berlin) story ... we'll hold till more details unfold, but you can find out ... First steps towards resolving the Mycenae Conspiracy "Mycenae was an Indo-European city-state of the Achaeans in ancient Greece's northeastern Peloponnesus. Around 1550 BC, Mycenae came to dominate the rest of Greece; this period is called the Mycenaean civilization, which was dominated by the warrior aristocracy. Around 1400 BC, the Mycenaeans conquered the Minoans, adopting their syllabary (now called Linear A) to write their own language (Greek, the new syllabary known as Linear B). ... Lion Gate at Mycenae.Mycenae thrived in the period that scholars believe corresponds to the events in Homer's Iliad. Some believe that Mycenae was the home of King Agamemnon. ... Around 1100 BC, it is thought that the Dorians attacked Greece from the north while the Sea People attacked from the sea. Numerous cities were sacked and the region entered a dark age. During this period the Mycenaeans adopted iron, instead of bronze; adopted cremation; and suffered from decreasing population and literacy rates. ... Around 800 BC, the dark age ended with beginning of Greek civilization." ...(from wikipedia) ... The topic requires further examination as to the disappearance of writing and civilization for over 300 years (some say 500 years) ... possibly a foreshadowing of end results of terrorism. ---

Global Aging and Financial Markets: Hard Landings Ahead (CSIS Significant Issues Series) by Robert Stowe England, Robert Hormats -- looks to be a serious alert --- "The retirement of the baby boom generation poses a challenge to the world's financial markets. This book examines the prospect that, after 2020, pension funds will have to pay out more in benefits than employers will be contributing, and it considers the extent to which individuals will liquidate equity holdings, or switch to bond holdings, or do both to sustain their living standards. The book examines the possibility that these changes will drive down equity values." take a look ...

Atlantic Tsunami - Now on the watchlist: (see Tsunami) this came up earlier ... apparently a claim was made that "Scientists find undersea cracks which could trigger Atlantic tsunami". Don't know how credible this is, but ... statement made is "The possibility of an East Coast tsunami isn't as remote as many would like to believe, three scientists report in this month's issue of the journal Geology. ... Neal Driscoll of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution on Cape Cod, Jeffrey Weissel of Columbia University and John Goff of the University of Texas at Austin said recently discovered cracks off the coast could mean the continental shelf is unstable. ... The researchers say they discovered the cracks along a 25-mile section of the continental shelf or the part of the continent in shallow seas off the Virginia and North Carolina Coast." -- this topic is being added to the watch list. Gerard Fryer of the Hawaii Institute of Geophysics and Planetology discusses them here. He also reminds us that "Many people are unaware that landslides can generate tsunamis too (a landslide will suck down the sea surface behind it; the hole in the sea surface will oscillate to give a series of waves). There have been several landslide-generated tsunamis in the Atlantic. The most recent was in 1929, when glacial debris dropped at the edge of Georges Bank by the St. Lawrence River collapsed down the continental slope of North America. That tsunami killed twenty six people along the Burin Peninsula of Newfoundland."

.... following up on User Interfaces (as entrypoints to empires of the mind), and the The Tomb of God.... This piece from The Love Affairs of a Bibliomaniac "I thank God continually that it hath been my lot in life to found an empire in my heart --no cramped and wizened borough wherein one jealous mistress hath exercised her petty tyranny, but an expansive and ever-widening continent divided and subdivided into dominions, jurisdictions, caliphates, chiefdoms, seneschalships, and prefectures, wherein tetrarchs, burgraves, maharajahs, palatines, seigniors, caziques, nabobs, emirs, nizams, and nawabs hold sway, each over his special and particular realm, and all bound together in harmonious cooperation by the conciliating spirit of polybibliophily!" seemed full of interesting terms .... I guess I didn't realize just how important seneschalships could be. Right up there with the caziques, I imagine. GO SPIRIT!

YUP! -- its the End of 'the End of' ... well, may be not ... it appears that 1999 was the peak year for 'the end of' with 123 books published (with 'the-end-of' in their titles). Stage 1 analysis is located here. Interestingly, of 1990 titles [there are 1559 distinct title words of length of 4 letters or greater with total Individual Occurrences of 8187 words] the leaders of the end of title word pack are: world which occurs 238(2.91%) of the time, century 229 (2.8%), history 114(1.39%), time 78(0.95%), life 88(0.94%). This will be analyzed more closely later. [if you understand this you probably like Zipf].

looking at User Interfaces .... I ran into an interesting technical paper Five Centuries of UI Design by Bill Hill of Microsoft Corporation. Its full of interesting ideas ... the one that caught my eye -- The "Book," when you boil it right down to its essence, is nothing but sooty marks on shredded trees. Yet it can capture our attention and hold it for hours. Not only that, but as we read a book, it disappears. We're no longer aware of "the book" we're holding out there; the "real book" is happening inside our heads. -- [via msdn library]; I guess when we generalize Hill's 'Book', why, almost everything in communication can be viewed that way ... but the book is very elegant and powerful (as are movies).
