04/26/2003 Archived Entry: "Rice Genome"
Genomics: The Scientific American 50’s Research Leader of the Year award went to Stephen Goff of Syngenta’s Torrey Mesa Research Institute, Yang Huanming of the Beijing Genomics Institute and Jun Yu of the University of Washington Genome Center for gene sequences — "for two types of rice, a crop that feeds more than half of the world’s population." A list of BACs on Chromosome 3 associated with US Rice Genome sequencing is located here; for sample GenBank data, look here for the Oryza sativa (japonica cultivar-group) chromosome 3 clone OSJNBb0043C10, complete sequence.
ORGANISM Oryza sativa (japonica cultivar-group) Eukaryota; Viridiplantae; Streptophyta; Embryophyta; Tracheophyta; Spermatophyta; Magnoliophyta; Liliopsida; Poales; Poaceae; Ehrhartoideae; Oryzeae; Oryza. {Japanese rice[common name], Oryza sativa subsp. japonica[misnomer], Oryza sativa japonica[misnomer]]
The comment that went along with the note:
" On Oct 22, 2002 this sequence version replaced gi:18092959.
This sequence was finished as follows unless otherwise noted: all
regions were either double-stranded or sequenced with an alternate
chemistry or covered by high quality data (i.e., phred quality
>=30); an attempt was made to resolve all sequencing problems, such
as compressions and repeats; all regions were covered by more than
one plasmid subclone; and the assembly was confirmed by restriction
digest. There are two G runs at 79569 -79575 and 79577-79588. The
nucleotide sequence of this BAC clone was generated by combining
Monsanto, Syngenta and Arizona Genomics Institute sequencing data.
The assembly overlaps from base 1-10525 with OJ1384D03 (accession
#AC113930). The overlap is from bases 105690-116214 on OJ1384D03.
